After graduation from the University of Oregon, Rob worked his way up at his hometown paper, The Springfield (Ore.) News, first as a sports reporter, then as a photojournalist and finally as editor-in-chief.

He did a similar ladder climb at The (Eugene, Ore.) Register-Guard, starting out as a page designer before an 18-year run as the paper’s director of photography/design. He was a senior editor when he left the paper in 2020.

He has worked as a photo editor for The New York Times since 2021.

Rob has won numerous awards for photography, writing, editing, design and graphics. Under his watch, The Register-Guard was consistently honored in the Pictures of the Year and Best of Photojournalism competitions. Rob’s photos were part of the entry that was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Spot News Photography in 1999.

Rob lives in Springfield with his wife, Cami, an elementary school librarian. Their son, Nick, works in finance in New York City. Their daughter, Kat, is a full-time student at Oregon State University.
